Lightly raced four-year-old Toffee Nuts is the latest winner for Emsley Lodge mare They Call Me Bolt after posting a gritty maiden win at Yarra Valley on Saturday.
The home-bred by Toorak Toff is a half-brother to dual winner One Penny Red and looks set to give his band of owners plenty of fun.
Ridden by Jack Hill, Toffee Nuts sat behind a hot pace in the ME Fitness & Motivation Maiden Plate (1000m) and finished strongly to score narrowly in a three-way finish from Gold Gift and Magic Drum.
The gelding had placed twice in his previous five runs and improved off his latest fourth at Camperdown where he contested the lead and weakened out of a place.
Trainer Jamie Edwards said that with a ton a speed in Saturday’s race he expected Toffee Nuts to get a good run behind the leaders, and the race worked out perfectly.
“It mapped exactly how we thought and he just landed behind them without spending a cent from his good gate,” Jamie said.
Toffee Nuts is a big horse and momentarily became unbalanced the urgings of Jack on the home turn but once straightened up he charged to the line.
Jack Hill said that Toffee Nuts gave the impression that would run a strong a 1200-metres which opens up many more opportunities for him.
While it was only a maiden, Jamie expects decent form will come out of the race.
“There was a bit of depth in the race and the form might hold up,” Jamie said.
