The marathon Jericho Cup is back on the agenda for Reddivo who posted an emphatic win at Warrnambool.
The rising eight year-old dominated Thursday’s Cassign BM70 Hcp (3172m) and had the field covered as far out as 1000 m from home when Jockey Teo Nugent took him to the lead.
He held a commanding break of six lengths coming to the home turn and extended his lead up the straight despite being eased down in the closing stages to score by 12 lengths.
Assistant trainer James Edwards said it was an amazing victory, especially as it was clear Reddivo had the race won a long way out.
Trainer Jamie Edwards said he had not had a horse win by such a big margin.
“I think 12 lengths is a record for me. I may have had a horse win by 11 lengths one day, but I can’t recall a bigger margin than that.
Reddivo is step closer to getting a start in November’s $300,000 Jericho Cup (4600m) at Warrnambool after earning three points for Thursday’s win.
Last year he finished eighth in the Jericho Cup when the race was slightly was transferred to the Warrnambool course proper over a shorter distance because of track conditions while injury prevented him from running the 2024 staying feature.
“Last year we had him conditioned for the undulating track at Warrnambool, so it was disappointing when he wasn’t able to contest the race on the traditional course,” Jamie said.
Teo Nugent said Reddivo was a delight to ride.
“You don’t get many horses that are kinder than him to ride,” Teo said.
“He’s a beautiful horse, he does everything right, and he would be great horse for someone learning to ride.
“He travelled comfortably for me and had a lovely time out there.
“They were genuine heavy conditions, but he got through them well.
“He’s just an out and out stayer and he’d go another lap.
Reddivo has won five of his 46 starts and placed second eight times and third once for more than $173,000 in prizemoney.
