Come Along Jeffrey posted his third win in a row and the first on his hometown track when he led all the way at Geelong on Friday.
Coming off victories at Hamilton and Dunkeld last month, the seven-year-old is in career-best form and has now won eight races since his maiden success less than 2-1/2 years ago.
Just a day after celebrating her debut city success at Caulfield, two-kilo claiming apprentice Jordyn Weatherly travelled to Geelong for her only ride on the day on Come Along Jeffrey in the The Ave Con Cup BM64 Hcp (1343m).
The 20-year-old made the most of her opportunity with the son of Super One bursting a half-length in front from his outside gate and easily crossing the field to a three-length lead.
“He probably went a bit hard early because he was so fit, but I was able to get him in a nice rhythm when left alone in front,” Jordyn said.
“He came back underneath me and travelled beautifully, and as soon as he saw them out of the blinkers, he took off again.”
Shouldering 60.5kg after the claim, Come Along Jeffrey ($4.80) was far too good for the Hayes-trained favourite Apparatus ($2.45), scoring by 1-1/4 lengths with Mean Feat ($7.50) another 1-1/2 lengths away third.
Trainer Jamie Edwards said it was a perfect ride from Jordyn.
“The horse was really fit, and the idea was to make them chase her and on the the corner ride him like she stole him,” Jamie said.
Jamie said Come Along Jeffrey had been a difficult horse to train but with age had now become a stable favourite.
“His owner Brian O’Dwyer bought him online as a tried horse after placing at Echuca at his first start and he’s now won eight races from 36 starts and placed another 10 times.
“He’s never raced better and won more than $180,000 and he’s not finished yet.
“He hasn’t done a lot of city racing so the next obvious step for him is a non-metro win race in Melbourne.”
