HANDSOME galloper Sertorius, the easiest winner on Geelong Cup day, is set to make a big impression at Flemington on Oaks Day or the Kyneton Cup on November 2nd.
Freshwater Creek co-trainerJamie Edwrds had several options during the four-day Flemington carnival for Sertorius but favours a $100,000 Rating 0-89 Hcp (1800m) restricted to four and five year-olds.
But Edwards is a little concerned that Sertorius was not rehandicapped for his seven-length, effortless win at Geelong."He's on the minimum weight for that race and there's the risk he might not get a start," Edwards said. "Everyone wants to go into those sort of races during Cup week and he'd be a long way down in the order of entry. "But he's the right age (four) and the 1800 metres will suit seeing he won easily over 1700m at Geelong.
Edwards plans to enter Sertorius for the $100,000 Kyneton Cup (2000m) on November 2nd, the day before Oaks Day, as another option.. "Our stable horse De Arias ran 3rd in the Kyneton Cup last year so that is the sort of horse you need to win the race," Edwards said.
Sertorius would sneak in on the minimum weight, get about 6kg off his rivals and he sits up on the speed. And it might not be a full field.. I'll meet with owner, Mike Palmer, and map something out," Edwards said.
Edwards and co-trainer Bruce Elkington believe Sertorius is genuine city class.
The gelding by Galileo from Pretty Penny was bred by Bill Cockram at Glentree Downs Stud, Modewarre.
"Sertorius was the best looking colt at the melbourne Premier yearling sales," Edwards said. Mike Palmer went there to buy a couple of fillies but I showed him Sertorius and he fell in love with him too." Palmer who is building up a band of quality brood-mares at Steiglitz, bought Sertorius for $100,000.
